What are Lutein and Zeaxanthin?
They’re carotenoids, the same family of natural pigments that gives many fruits and vegetables their yellow and orange colors. Your body can’t make them, so they must come from foods like leafy greens, egg yolks, and corn, or from supplements, which are often extracted from marigold flowers. In the body, they concentrate in the retina and macula, and they’re also found in the brain and skin.
Can I get enough Lutein and Zeaxanthin from food?
Leafy greens like kale and spinach are excellent sources, but most American diets provide only about 1 to 2 mg of Lutein a day, well below the amounts used in eye research.
Should I take it with food?
Yes. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are fat-soluble, so they’re best absorbed with a meal that contains some fat, and taking Green Tea extract with food is also a sensible precaution.
